CALMA WATER CLUB
2026.8.30 SUN — 9.5 SAT Takami River, Higashiyoshino, Nara 10 per day / invitation only

Welcome to CALMA WATER CLUB.

This page is private. You are here because someone who has been in this river invited you, password in hand. CALMA WATER CLUB spreads only from person to person — a club for enjoying the underwater world.

What we do is simple. Enter the water, feel its world with your whole body, watch its inhabitants — and hunt them. Spearing ayu is allowed only during the open season set by the fishery cooperative: once a year, just these few days. Ten people per day. No public recruiting. Enter the river this year, and next year you can be the one who invites.

The stage is the Takami River in Higashiyoshino, Nara. Ayu feed on algae on the riverbed — a river with ayu is proof of clean water.

The Takami River. Searching for ayu with your own eyes, guide at your side
One day's catch. Some days you catch, some days you don't.

Dates & Fees

Each day is confirmed once bookings reach 5 people. Everyone booked on that day gets a confirmation email. If a day stays under 5 and is cancelled, we will contact you in advance.

Ayu are most abundant on opening day, and decrease day by day.
The water gets colder, too.
Prices simply reflect that difference.

Each day also has a night session: lighting the riverbed to find sleeping ayu and spear them. Visibility and temperature are very different from daytime, so it is open only to those who have fished with CWC before (not on your first day). Nights run with 4 or more (no upper limit). ¥5,500 if you also join the day session; ¥8,800 for night-only. The night session meets at 20:00 at CALMA WATER CLUB. An underwater (waterproof) light is required — you fish by lighting the riverbed with your own light, so you cannot join without one. One fishing permit covers both day and night.

The night session. Fishing by the light of a single lamp

Prices include your guide and tax. A fishing permit (¥2,500/day, paid on site) is required separately. "First-timers" includes a lesson from spear handling up; "Experienced" is for those who have joined before.

Buy an original spear.

CALMA makes and sells an original spear — made in Japan, entirely handmade, every part replaceable. Honestly, we want you in the water with a tool that does not break. Cheap imported gear breaks fast and becomes trash; the rubber on leftover stock spears can snap on the first pull, and the design cannot be repaired.

Every part of the CALMA spear can be replaced. It is built to be repaired and used for years.

Hang the tool on your wall with the good memories; let your mind drift back, then return to the river. An object that brings nature back to your mind — that is exactly why people buy a work of art.

From ¥22,000. Quantities are limited, so spears are by reservation — tick "Buy an original spear" in the form below.

Heating and hammering the steel.
Finished by hand.

Private bookings.

For groups over 10, or a full-day private booking (up to 20), email us with your preferred date, headcount and plans — company days, team retreats, shoots. Ryo Okamoto, the founder, will reply directly.

Before you join

  1. High water or weather can cancel a day. Fees are paid on site, so a cancelled day costs you nothing. The season is short — dates cannot be rescheduled.
  2. Each day runs with 5 or more participants. If a day stays under 5, we will contact you before the date (no fee charged).
  3. Invitations cannot be transferred or sold.
  4. Follow your guide's instructions. The river is a wild place.
  5. Spearfishing is for junior-high age (13) and up. If family members are coming along without fishing, mention it in Notes when you book.
  6. We fish under the rules of the fishery cooperative. Buy your fishing permit (¥2,500/day) on site — one covers both day and night. Every yen of it funds the cooperative that keeps this river and its fish alive.
  7. Pay your fee on site, on the day (cash, credit card, PayPay).
  8. Book up to 3 days before your date. Cancellations also 3 days before, please — preparations depend on it.
  9. What to bring, the schedule, meeting point and lodging are in the participation guide. Read it before the day before your date. Lunch cannot be bought in the village — bring your own.
